Year 6

The final year of our Prep department, Year 6, is a unique time that prepares pupils to be confident, enthusiastic and ready for their next step in education. This year offers a variety of different opportunities for pupils to expand their skills and deepen their learning in meaningful ways, helping them to become well-rounded, outstanding individuals who are ready for secondary school.

Pupils are encouraged to take on new challenges and contribute to school life, promoting a deeper sense of responsibility, confidence and respect. Every pupil will have the chance to assume a positive role as House Captain, Deputy House Captain, Sports Captain or as the Leader or Deputy Leader for one of our seven councils, which are based around the different areas of the Crown House Tapestry:

• School Council

Our curriculum remains broad and balanced, further supporting pupils in reaching their potential. We understand that facing the Secondary Transfer test (11+) can be a stressful time so we strive to ensure that every pupil feels confident in their abilities and makes maximised progress. Our dedicated teachers work closely with pupils and their families throughout this process, providing comprehensive support and guidance to ensure they feel fully equipped and informed. In 2023 and 2024, 88% of our Year 6 pupils went on to local Grammar schools.

In addition to our standard curriculum, we offer enriched learning experiences, including workshops, guest speakers and interdisciplinary projects that connect different subjects in meaningful ways. A highlight of Year 6 is the week-long outdoor education trip to the Arete Outdoor Learning Centre in North Wales, where pupils engage in a variety of adventurous activities that promote teamwork, resilience, and personal growth. These experiences allow pupils to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, developing critical thinking skills and creativity.

Extracurricular activities complement our academic programmes and include clubs, competitions and community outreach initiatives, all designed to enhance pupils’ learning experiences. This holistic approach fosters not only academic excellence but also a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom, ensuring that pupils are supported and encouraged, both academically and personally, to achieve their full potential.
