Building confidence, knowledge and a love of learning
As children move into Pre-Prep, we build carefully upon the curiosity, confidence and independence developed during the Early Years.
Years 1 and 2 are an important bridge. Children encounter increasing structure and academic challenge while continuing to learn in an environment that is creative, engaging and responsive to their individual needs. Our small classes allow teachers to know pupils exceptionally well, providing support where it is needed and challenge where children are ready for more.
Our curriculum is firmly rooted in the National Curriculum, with strong foundations in English and mathematics. Phonics and reading remain particularly important, with systematic teaching helping children become increasingly fluent and confident readers. Through English, pupils develop their writing, vocabulary, comprehension and communication, while mathematics builds fluency, reasoning and confidence in working with number and mathematical concepts.
Alongside these foundations, children experience a broad curriculum encompassing Science, Humanities, PSHE, Art, RE and Computing, with opportunities to make meaningful connections between their learning and the wider world.
Specialist teaching in areas including Music, Drama, French, PE, Games and Swimming, alongside wider creative and co-curricular opportunities, gives children the chance to discover new interests and experience success in many different forms.
Throughout Pre-Prep, we begin to develop greater independence and responsibility. Our Crown House Learning Behaviours encourage children to become Resilient, Reflective, Creative, Kind and Tolerant, giving them an accessible language through which to understand themselves both as learners and as members of our community.
High expectations sit comfortably alongside enjoyment. Children are encouraged to ask questions, persevere when something is difficult, take pride in their achievements and care about the achievements and wellbeing of others.
By the end of Year 2, pupils are ready to move into Prep with secure foundations, growing independence and confidence in themselves as learners.
